Teacher Script & Notes
What to say / Spoken Script
A number squared is the number multiplied by itself. We call it 'squared' because it represents the area of a square. A 3 by 3 grid has exactly 9 small squares. Thus, 3 squared is 9.
What to do / Action Guide
Display the 3x3 grid highlighting the 9 segments.
Pedagogical Tips
Ask students to identify the base (length) and exponent (dimensions).
What to say / Spoken Script
The square root is the inverse operation. If we are given an area of 9, the square root of 9 tells us the side length of that square, which is 3. Square roots answer the question: 'What number multiplied by itself gives this area?'
What to do / Action Guide
Highlight the base/side of the square grid.
Pedagogical Tips
Connect the root symbol to the word 'radical' meaning 'root' or origin.
