Teacher Script & Notes
What to say / Spoken Script
Fractions represent equal shares of a whole. Here, we have a circle divided into 4 equal quarters. If we shade 3 of those quarters, we represent the fraction 3/4. The numerator 3 is the parts we have, and the denominator 4 is the total parts.
What to do / Action Guide
Show the fraction circle with 3 shaded wedges.
Pedagogical Tips
Have students count the total wedges first, then the colored ones to establish numerator and denominator.
What to say / Spoken Script
How do we write 3/4 as a decimal? We divide the numerator by the denominator: 3 divided by 4. Since 4 goes into 30 seven times with a remainder of 2, and then 4 goes into 20 five times, we get 0.75.
What to do / Action Guide
Display the division equation and the decimal equivalence side by side.
Pedagogical Tips
Emphasize that the fraction bar literally means division.
